John Procter - Fantastical
December 4 - 27

John Procter was born and raised in East Vancouver. He was the first Easter baby born at 12:01am on March 26, 1948. His mom was given a free baby carriage from the hospital to commemorate the occasion. John attended Templeton High School and tried Simon Fraser University for a semester, but decided it wasn't for him. John has lived a blue collar life, doing what needs to be done to get by, as well as creating masterful collages, mobiles, and paintings, which was he real life passion.

Being a self-taught artist, John picked up art-making skills throughout his life. Because money was usually scarce, John never afforded himself the luxury to paint on canvas but rather, inexpensive or found materials. Whatever the materials may be, John's finished work is made with impeccable details and craftsmanship.

John's work is reminiscent of Alexander Calder in his mobiles because of their elegant

use of organic shapes, balance, and colour. His collages have the precision and complexity of

Hannah Hoch. John's artwork is not without influence as he is well read and informs himself

on who has come before him.

John's work is a pleasant escape from the regular day to day. This exhibition will slap you in the

face with the colour and fantastical joy you need right now!

As outsiders to this land—the land of the xÊ·mÉ™θkÊ·É™y̓əm / Musqueam , Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw / Squamish,

and sÉ™lÌ“ilw̓ətaʔɬ / Tsleil-Waututh  Nations — we continue to acknowledge their stewardship of these lands

since time immemorial.

We acknowledge the colonial history that has devastated these lands and peoples,

and we are committed to learning from the past to help create a shared future of observation, reconciliation,

and understanding. As visitors to this land, our gallery is committed to supporting the development of local Indigenous peoples and communities.

In gratitude and with ever-evolving knowledge, we look forward to honest and open dialogue between Indigenous peoples and the outsiders who are here to create, learn, and prosper together.
