Call for Artists

Our primary focus is to bring non-traditional artists to the forefront.

For us, these are artists who identify as outsider, self-taught, and living with a disability.

All artists are welcome to apply but these artists are always given priority in our selection process.

We are currently seeking artists for the following upcoming exhibitions:

Postcards from the Edge

Deadline for postcards: December 1, 2025

Don’t wait. Do it now!

Postcards from the Edge is an opportunity for us to step into the world of mail art, which has a long history in the art world.

“Mail art, also known as postal art and correspondence art, is an artistic movement centered on sending small-scale works through the postal service. It developed out of what eventually became Ray Johnson’s New York Correspondence School and the Fluxus movements of the 1960s. It has since developed into a global, ongoing movement.”
— Wikipedia

We presented a similar exhibition two years ago and it was so much fun—we want to do it again! The only way we can do this is with you, the artists who are inspired by such ideas and imagery. We want to see your work!

Match Box / Group Exhibition

Exhibition: October 2026

Deadline for submissions: August 15, 2026

Don’t wait. Do it now!

Outsiders and Others was based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA a long time ago. At one point, we presented an exhibition of local artists who created paintings inside wooden matchboxes. It was a great exhibition, and now it’s time to expand on that concept.

Artists from around the world are encouraged to apply! It all starts with an empty matchbox and your imagination. We want you to create a piece of artwork that exists inside a matchbox. It can be painting, sculpture, mixed media—anything! The goal is to present a collection of matchboxes that, when opened, reveal your creative vision or world.

Matchboxes look different all over the world and come in many sizes. Once you start looking at them, you’ll be amazed.

Every matchbook we receive will be in the exhibition!

How to apply.

Please physically mail us:

  • A brief bio about yourself

  • A resume that includes your education and exhibition history

  • The matchbox you have created for the exhibition (you are responsible for mailing the artwork to us; after the exhibition, we will mail it back to you)

The Foot & The Mouth / Group Exhibition

Exhibition: November 2026

Deadline for submissions: September 15, 2026

Don’t wait. Do it now!

Disability discrimination continues to be present in the lives of people living with disabilities. Challenging society’s views is easy when we showcase the incredible talent within this community.

When it comes to physical disabilities, there are artists who do not have arms or the use of their arms. These artists are sometimes referred to as “foot and mouth” painters. Many artists use their mouth or feet to create art, and their commitment can be seen in the quality of their work. We want to share that with you.

How to apply
In one email, please send us:

  • A brief bio about yourself

  • A resume that includes your education and exhibition history

  • Up to 3 images or samples of artwork you want to be considered (please send JPEG files)

  • A list of artworks that includes title, size, and medium

There is no application fee.

As outsiders to this land—the land of the xÊ·mÉ™θkÊ·É™y̓əm / Musqueam , Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw / Squamish,

and sÉ™lÌ“ilw̓ətaʔɬ / Tsleil-Waututh  Nations — we continue to acknowledge their stewardship of these lands

since time immemorial.

We acknowledge the colonial history that has devastated these lands and peoples,

and we are committed to learning from the past to help create a shared future of observation, reconciliation,

and understanding. As visitors to this land, our gallery is committed to supporting the development of local Indigenous peoples and communities.

In gratitude and with ever-evolving knowledge, we look forward to honest and open dialogue between Indigenous peoples and the outsiders who are here to create, learn, and prosper together.
