Norman Fox: Camera Crossing

April 1 - May 1, 2022

Opening reception on Saturday April 2 from 3 - 5pm

Norman Fox was born in Calgary, grew up in Port Coquitlam and in 1980, moved to East Vancouver.

His images are real, in the moment, and command your attention.

From Norman:

"My first experience as an artist was at the age of 47, on the heels of significant life changes.

For myself, being an artist meant first learning how to use a camera. Without formal schooling, living on the DTES, I relied on library books, documentaries, and other internet resources to learn more from my influences at the time: Henri Cartier-Bresson, Dianne Arbus, and local photographers Jeff Wall and Fred Hertzog.

My practical experience was grown from three years of daily walks through East Vancouver and the DTES, learning the mechanics of a camera through trial and error."

This is Norman's first gallery exhibition.

As outsiders to this land—the land of the xÊ·mÉ™θkÊ·É™y̓əm / Musqueam , Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw / Squamish,

and sÉ™lÌ“ilw̓ətaʔɬ / Tsleil-Waututh  Nations — we continue to acknowledge their stewardship of these lands

since time immemorial.

We acknowledge the colonial history that has devastated these lands and peoples,

and we are committed to learning from the past to help create a shared future of observation, reconciliation,

and understanding. As visitors to this land, our gallery is committed to supporting the development of local Indigenous peoples and communities.

In gratitude and with ever-evolving knowledge, we look forward to honest and open dialogue between Indigenous peoples and the outsiders who are here to create, learn, and prosper together.
