Blackbird Singing in the Dead of Night

Featuring 12 artists from South Korea, France, The Netherlands, US, and Canada.

September 7 - 28

Opening reception: September 7 from 2-4pm (free and open to the public!)

Artworks by Gregory Bannister / USA, Anita Le Bo / France, Mary Bowman-Cline / USA,

Jasonda Desmond / Canada, Clay Dixon / Canada, Liset van Dommelen / The Netherlands, Ian Freemantle / Canada, Lisa Huth / Canada, Haejae Debbie Oh / South Korea, Keegan Wenkman / USA, Beth Wilks / Canada, and Laleh Zandi / Canada.

Birds have been loved by people forever. And Blackbirds are even more so as they are represented in so many cultures and with so many different meaning. Some say intuition and protection or even death and bad luck. It all depends on the viewer.

We put a call for artists out to see what the world would bring us and what came forward was nothing less than intriguing and beautiful. The exhibition represents these majestic creatures in forged metal, paint, ink, pencils, ball point pens, and found materials.

Enjoy the show!

As outsiders to this land—the land of the xÊ·mÉ™θkÊ·É™y̓əm / Musqueam , Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw / Squamish,

and sÉ™lÌ“ilw̓ətaʔɬ / Tsleil-Waututh  Nations — we continue to acknowledge their stewardship of these lands

since time immemorial.

We acknowledge the colonial history that has devastated these lands and peoples,

and we are committed to learning from the past to help create a shared future of observation, reconciliation,

and understanding. As visitors to this land, our gallery is committed to supporting the development of local Indigenous peoples and communities.

In gratitude and with ever-evolving knowledge, we look forward to honest and open dialogue between Indigenous peoples and the outsiders who are here to create, learn, and prosper together.
