Immigration

March 7-28, 2026

Opening reception: March 7 from 6-8pm

Artist talk: March 21 at 2pm.

Outsiders and Others is please to present Immigration, an exhibition featuring 4 self-taught artists who emigrated to Canada. These artists are Yee Chan, Paulina Constancia, Svitlana Denysova and Anne Wang.

The exhibition features plein air paintings, traditional Ukrainian folk art, and paintings made with natural materials like onions, coffee, and turmeric.

Yee Chan

I am self-taught and my art journey started with making birthday and Christmas cards for friends and family in the early 2000s. Art activity was an important tool for stress relief during my working career. My daily practice started as a pandemic hobby in March 2020. To keep connected with a few friends, we post a piece every day to encourage each other along. 6 years later, we are still at it!

Childhood art lessons sparked a love for the arts that endured. In 1974, at a young age, my family immigrated from Hong Kong to Montreal. My exposure to both Asian and Western art informs my work, with the influences from these two distinct cultures.

Paulina Constancia

I am a multidisciplinary naïf artist originally from Cebu, Philippines, now based in Vancouver, Canada. Through painting, textiles, and found materials, I create visual stories that give lasting form to fleeting moments and emotions, expressed through colour, humour, and empathy.

As an immigrant, there are times when I feel lost or invisible, as though a previous life has been erased. Making art becomes a way of resisting that erasure. Through vibrant colour and recurring motifs such as the sun, animals, and outward-looking figures, I explore migration, belonging, and resilience.

Svitlana Denysova

I have always been inspired by Ukrainian folk art, especially petrykivka painting - expressive and instantly recognizable, born from tradition and immigration. After the war began in the Ukraine, I moved to Canada. Working in this style became a way for me to preserve my connection to my native culture. Through folk painting I strive to introduce the world to Ukrainian art and to share it’s beauty and strength.

Anne Wang

I am a painter and ceramicist. Creating in the spaces between work and a challenging personal life, my art seeks to create light and joy in the midst of hardship.

I primarily paint with gouache en plein air, depicting natural landscapes and street scenes on Coast Salish territory.

These paintings are dedicated to my husband, with love and hope for his recovery.

As outsiders to this land—the land of the xÊ·mÉ™θkÊ·É™y̓əm / Musqueam , Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw / Squamish,

and sÉ™lÌ“ilw̓ətaʔɬ / Tsleil-Waututh  Nations — we continue to acknowledge their stewardship of these lands

since time immemorial.

We acknowledge the colonial history that has devastated these lands and peoples,

and we are committed to learning from the past to help create a shared future of observation, reconciliation,

and understanding. As visitors to this land, our gallery is committed to supporting the development of local Indigenous peoples and communities.

In gratitude and with ever-evolving knowledge, we look forward to honest and open dialogue between Indigenous peoples and the outsiders who are here to create, learn, and prosper together.
