Deborah Leigh

Please join us in celebrating the new solo exhibition by self taught artist Deborah Leigh.

Deborah is one of a few artists that we have worked with on a long term basis because we believe she represents some of the best “outsider art” being created today in BC.

Deborah was born in Prince George in the early 1950’s. She didn’t start to draw until she was in her 50’s and is now in her 70’s, and more creative than ever.

During a period of recovery from an illness, Deborah started to “doodle” to help her relax. These “doodles” quickly evolved in size and in subject matter, from black and white to full colour.

Deborah now works and lives in Victoria on Vancouver Island.

"I create as a form of escapism, and I just love the process of creating. Each piece is never pre-planned, I simply work from my imagination, intuition, and the subconscious. My hope is that viewers could be drawn into my images with a sense of curiosity, wonderment, and questioning of what the images are trying to portray. I like to include pathways, roads, and byways that represent the journeys we all undertake and where these paths may be leading us to in our lives. My art is the pathway to the imaginary place in our minds. It is escapism – a place I can journey to, where all of our pain, struggles and worries can be left behind. Within my work I find a sense of peace, even if it’s just for a matter of moments.”

As outsiders to this land—the land of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm / Musqueam , Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw / Squamish,

and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ / Tsleil-Waututh  Nations — we continue to acknowledge their stewardship of these lands

since time immemorial.

We acknowledge the colonial history that has devastated these lands and peoples,

and we are committed to learning from the past to help create a shared future of observation, reconciliation,

and understanding. As visitors to this land, our gallery is committed to supporting the development of local Indigenous peoples and communities.

In gratitude and with ever-evolving knowledge, we look forward to honest and open dialogue between Indigenous peoples and the outsiders who are here to create, learn, and prosper together.
